The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show made its highly anticipated return on Tuesday in New York, marking a comeback after a five-year hiatus following its cancellation. The event, known for its extravagant catwalks and musical performances, had been scrapped after the 2018 edition faced criticism for its lack of diversity, outdated portrayal of women, and declining viewership.
British supermodel Kate Moss, 50, made a surprising debut at the show alongside her 22-year-old daughter, Lila, as they walked the runway in striking outfits. The event featured performances from music icons Cher, Tyla, and Lisa from Blackpink, aiming to revitalize the brand's image. Launched in 1995, the show once captivated millions, but ratings had plummeted, with only three million viewers tuning in for the 2018 broadcast—down from nine million four years earlier.
Following a string of controversies, including comments about the lack of transgender and plus-sized models, the brand's former CEO resigned shortly after the last show. In an effort to revamp its image, Victoria's Secret promised this year's event would "celebrate all women," with Janie Schaffer, the company's British chief design and creative officer, stating that the brand has evolved significantly over the past few years.
This year’s lineup included Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio, the first transgender model to represent the brand in 2019, alongside another transgender model, Alex Consani. Plus-sized models Ashley Graham and Paloma Elsesser also graced the runway, though some critics felt this representation was merely symbolic given the company's history.
While Moss wowed the audience in a black lace dress and iconic angel wings, familiar faces like Gigi and Bella Hadid, Barbara Palvin, and Candice Swanepoel also made their return to the catwalk. Tyra Banks, former host of "America's Next Top Model," was seen at the event for the first time since 2009, and Adriana Lima walked the runway again after her appearance in 2018.
Reactions to the comeback show have been mixed. Some praised the efforts toward diversity, noting the inclusion of 50 models from 25 different countries. However, critics, including Harper's Bazaar’s Dani Maher and Teen Vogue's Aiyana Ishmael, pointed out that the runway still heavily favored thin, conventionally attractive models.
They expressed concern that, despite the brand's efforts, the show did not significantly alter the beauty standards often projected by Victoria's Secret.
