US Issues 30-Day Ultimatum to Israel for Increased Humanitarian Aid Access in Gaza
In a significant diplomatic move, the United States has formally notified Israel that it has 30 days to enhance access to humanitarian aid in Gaza or face potential cuts to military assistance. This letter, sent on Sunday and confirmed by the State Department, represents the most explicit warning from the US regarding the humanitarian crisis in the region, coinciding with a new Israeli offensive in northern Gaza that has led to numerous civilian casualties.
The communication expresses deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation, noting that nearly 90% of humanitarian movements from north to south Gaza were impeded in September. The letter, signed by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, highlights urgent actions Israel must take to improve aid delivery and warns of implications for US policy should these actions not be taken.
Currently, approximately 1.7 million people have been forced into the crowded al-Mawasi area, where humanitarian organizations report that survival needs are not being met. The US insists that Israel must facilitate a significant increase in aid, aiming for at least 350 trucks to enter Gaza daily and to cease the isolation of northern Gaza.
While the Israeli military claims it is targeting Hamas operatives and facilitating aid, it has faced criticism for its restrictions. Recent reports indicate that only a small amount of aid had been delivered in the previous two weeks, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller emphasized that the letter was meant to communicate the urgency of the situation and that the US hopes Israel will comply with the outlined changes. He clarified that while US law prohibits military assistance to countries that obstruct US humanitarian aid, the administration's aim is to encourage cooperation rather than impose penalties.
The Israeli government has maintained that it does not limit aid deliveries and blames UN agencies for logistical failures. However, escalating tensions and civilian displacements continue to fuel fears for the safety and well-being of those in Gaza. As the situation evolves, both the US and Israel are navigating complex geopolitical dynamics amid rising humanitarian concerns.
