The Pentagon announced on Sunday that the United States will deploy an advanced anti-missile system, known as the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), along with approximately 100 US troops, to bolster Israel's air defenses. This move comes in response to recent unprecedented attacks by Iran on April 13 and October 1.

This isn't the first time THAAD has been deployed in the region; the system was previously sent to Israel in 2019 for a military exercise. However, the addition of US troops is significant given the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, particularly as concerns grow about a potential Israeli strike on Iran that could further heighten hostilities.

The THAAD system is designed to provide anti-ballistic missile defense, enhancing Israel's capabilities against potential future Iranian attacks. US officials have been in close consultation with Israeli leaders regarding responses to the October 1 assault, emphasizing that any retaliation should be "proportional" and avoiding direct strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities or oil fields.

Since the onset of the conflict on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, the US military has ramped up its presence in the Middle East. This includes increased air defenses, additional warships and aircraft carriers deployed to strategic areas, and the recent stationing of troops in Cyprus for potential evacuation operations.

The Wall Street Journal first reported on the THAAD deployment, marking a notable shift in US military strategy in the region.
