Game Freak, the developer behind the iconic Pokémon franchise, has confirmed that it was recently targeted by a data breach. Over the weekend, it was revealed that the company’s servers were hacked in August, leading to the exposure of sensitive information.
In a statement, Game Freak disclosed that 2,606 items containing the names and email addresses of current, former, and contract employees were accessed during the breach. While the company acknowledged this significant leak, it refrained from commenting on additional information circulating online that allegedly includes details about unreleased projects.
To address the situation, Game Freak plans to reach out individually to those affected and is implementing enhanced security measures to prevent future incidents. “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused to all involved,” the company stated.
As a key player in the Pokémon franchise, Game Freak collaborates closely with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, which oversees one of the most valuable media properties globally. Currently, the team is hard at work on the upcoming release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, set to launch next year.
In a related note, last month, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company took legal action against Pocketpair, the developers of the game Palword, which has been dubbed "Pokémon with guns" due to its character similarities. The lawsuit alleges patent infringement, although specific details have not yet been disclosed.
