A Vision for a Healthier America: Trump and RFK Jr. Join Forces
As the agriculture commissioner of a major farming state, I’m thrilled that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has joined President Trump’s campaign. Together, they can tackle the health crisis facing our nation, especially among our children. With more than 40% of adults and over 20% of kids classified as obese, it's clear we need change.
Inspired by President John F. Kennedy's emphasis on fitness, we can revive initiatives like the Presidential Fitness Challenge to prioritize health again. The rise in chronic diseases stems from decades of poor public policies that prioritize cheap, processed foods over quality nutrition. Whole, natural foods are essential for our well-being, yet the prevalence of ultra-processed items harms our health.
A crucial step would be reforming the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to support the purchase of healthy foods. In Texas, I oversee over 5 million school meals daily, providing kids with fresh, locally sourced options. Expanding this program nationally would promote better nutrition and benefit local farmers.
We also have the opportunity to launch a surplus crop program encouraging farmers to donate excess produce to food banks. By adopting regenerative farming practices, we can enhance soil health while delivering more nutritious food to communities.
Addressing environmental concerns, we need to eliminate harmful chemicals like PFAS from our soil and water. Like the pharmaceutical industry, Big Food prioritizes profits over health, and we must hold these industries accountable.
Under President Trump, farmers thrived as he opened new markets and implemented fair trade practices. As our nation faces rising chronic conditions, prioritizing health is essential. When we eat well, exercise, and maintain healthy routines, we improve not just individual well-being, but the strength of our communities.
With the leadership of President Trump and RFK Jr., America can embrace a new era of sustainable and profitable farming. Making America healthy again is not just a slogan; it’s about healing our culture and investing in our children's futures. Together, we can pave the way for a brighter, healthier tomorrow.
