Tottenham Hotspur triumphed over Manchester City with a 2-1 victory in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, marking the first defeat of the season for Pep Guardiola's team. The match took place in North London and saw Spurs advance to the quarterfinals, maintaining manager Ange Postecoglou’s hopes of securing a trophy in his second season.
The match began with City fielding a significantly altered lineup, making seven changes from their recent win against Southampton. Notably, star striker Erling Haaland did not participate at all. Tottenham quickly took advantage of City's defensive lapses, demonstrating their attacking prowess right from the start.
In the 10th minute, Dejan Kulusevski delivered a precise pass to Timo Werner, who scored his first goal of the season by striking the ball confidently into the net. Just 15 minutes later, Pape Matar Sarr added a second goal for Spurs, curling a beautiful shot from outside the penalty area following a well-worked corner kick.
City pulled one back just before halftime when Matheus Nunes connected with a cross from Savinho, scoring with their first shot on target. This goal reignited their hopes, but Spurs remained resolute in the second half, determined to maintain their lead.
The game took a turn for City when Savinho suffered an injury in the 62nd minute, leading to his substitution and disrupting their momentum. Despite a late push for an equalizer, including a near-miss from Nico O'Reilly that was cleared off the line by Yves Bissouma, Tottenham held firm, securing their 2-1 victory and a place in the next round of the competition.
