San Francisco Giants Fire Farhan Zaidi, Name Buster Posey as New President of Baseball Operations
The San Francisco Giants made a significant change on Monday, firing president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi and appointing franchise icon Buster Posey as his successor. Posey, a three-time World Series-winning catcher and seven-time All-Star, retired in 2021 and joined the Giants' ownership group in 2022.
Despite lacking extensive front-office experience, the Giants believe Posey’s baseball knowledge and leadership qualities make him the right fit. Chairman Greg Johnson emphasized Posey's ability to define and lead the team’s baseball philosophy alongside manager Bob Melvin.
Zaidi's tenure began in 2019, but under his leadership, the Giants struggled with consistent performance, finishing 80-82 this season after mediocre results in previous years. Although he oversaw a successful 2021 season, winning 107 games, the team's performance declined thereafter, prompting the change in leadership.
Johnson acknowledged Zaidi’s commitment to the organization but stated that the results were not meeting expectations, leading to the decision for new leadership to enhance the team’s chances of championship contention.
