The Kremlin announced on Sunday that it is set to formalize amendments to Russia's nuclear doctrine, updating the conditions under which Moscow may deploy its nuclear arsenal. This decision follows President Vladimir Putin's recent warning to the West, stating that the proposed changes could allow for nuclear responses if Russia is hit by conventional missiles. Putin emphasized that any attacks on Russia backed by a nuclear power would be viewed as a joint assault.
In essence, this means that if Ukraine, supported by Western long-range missiles, conducts strikes within Russian territory, Moscow may consider using nuclear weapons in retaliation. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov highlighted the amendments, pointing to rising tensions along Russia's borders, the encroachment of NATO infrastructure, and the increasing involvement of Western nuclear states in the conflict as key factors motivating these changes.
