Quincy Jones, the celebrated music producer and composer known for his work with artists like Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, and Michael Jackson, has passed away at the age of 91. His family announced that he died peacefully at his home in Bel Air, California, surrounded by loved ones. In their statement, they expressed profound sadness while celebrating his extraordinary life and contributions to music.


Born in Chicago, Jones developed an early passion for music, taking piano lessons and befriending Ray Charles during his youth. His family moved to Seattle, where he studied under renowned musician Clark Terry. By the age of 15, he began performing with jazz bands and caught the attention of bandleader Lionel Hampton, leading to a formative career in music.



Jones made history in 1964 when he became the first African American vice president at a major record label, Mercury Records. His early success included producing Leslie Gore’s hit “It’s My Party.” Throughout the 1960s, he composed soundtracks for films such as In the Heat of the Night and worked with legendary artists like Frank Sinatra and Peggy Lee, establishing his reputation in the industry.


In 1982, Jones achieved one of his most significant milestones by producing Michael Jackson’s Thriller, the best-selling album of all time. He continued to excel in music and philanthropy, famously gathering numerous artists for the charity single “We Are the World” in 1985. His talent extended to television as well, producing the hit series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air starring Will Smith.


Despite facing personal challenges, including a brain aneurysm in 1974, Jones remained active in the industry, founding the cultural magazine Vibe in 1993. He balanced his professional life with his family, having three marriages and seven children. His relationships included his high school sweetheart, Swedish model Ulla Andersson, and actress Peggy Lipton.



In his later years, Jones continued to influence music and culture, producing the documentary Keep on Keepin’ On in 2014. Reflecting on his illustrious career, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with every major music star in America.
