Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed on Sunday that North Korean troops are now actively fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, confirming recent reports of increasing military cooperation between the two countries. In a video address, Zelensky highlighted what he described as an “increasing alliance” between Russia and North Korea, which has extended beyond just arms transfers to include the deployment of North Korean personnel to support Russian military operations.
South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun echoed these concerns during a parliamentary session last week, stating it was "highly likely" that North Korean troops had been sent to Ukraine, aligning with the mutual defense agreements between Moscow and Pyongyang.
Recent reports from Ukrainian media also indicated that a Ukrainian strike in Russian-occupied Donetsk resulted in the deaths of several North Korean officers, underscoring the active involvement of North Korean forces in the conflict.
In exchange for artillery shells and ballistic missiles, North Korea has been receiving crucial military aid and technology from Russia to enhance its nuclear and space capabilities. The ties between the two nations were further solidified during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Pyongyang in June, where he and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un discussed a deepening relationship and mutual defense commitments.
As Russian forces continue their advances, particularly in the Donetsk region, Zelensky noted that Ukrainian defenders have displayed “exceptional performance” in resisting these attacks. However, he emphasized the need for stronger support from Ukraine’s allies, particularly in light of the growing collaboration between Russia and North Korea.
“The front line needs more support,” he stated, reiterating his call for greater military assistance, including the ability to conduct strikes deep into Russian territory—a request the U.S. has hesitated to grant due to concerns about escalating the conflict.
