North Korea Threatens to Destroy Cross-Border Roads Amid Drone Accusations Against South Korea

North Korea is reportedly preparing to demolish cross-border roads with South Korea, escalating tensions following accusations that the South sent drones to disperse anti-North leaflets over Pyongyang. South Korea’s military spokesman indicated that North Korean troops were camouflaging on their side of the border, likely gearing up for the destruction of these roads.
The tensions intensified when Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, blamed the South Korean military for the alleged drone intrusion and called on the U.S. to be held accountable as well. She described the situation as a violation of North Korea’s sovereignty and warned of a potential “horrible disaster” if further drone incursions occurred.
In response, North Korea has placed eight fully armed artillery units on standby at the border and announced plans to fortify its defenses. South Korea, while remaining tight-lipped about the drone allegations, has been enhancing its anti-drone capabilities since a previous incident in 2022 when North Korean drones penetrated its airspace.
The situation is complicated by the historical context: the two Koreas are still technically at war, having only reached an armistice after the 1950-53 conflict. Recent years had seen attempts at rapprochement, but those efforts have now seemingly unraveled as military tensions rise once more.
