North Korea has confirmed a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test, claiming it achieved the longest flight time for one of its missiles. This launch occurred just days before the U.S. presidential election and follows warnings from South Korean intelligence about possible missile activity coinciding with the election period. The test raises significant concerns in the West about North Korea's escalating military capabilities and intentions.
The missile was fired from Luna Island, reaching an altitude of approximately 7,000 kilometers (4,350 miles) and traveling about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) before landing in the sea west of Japan's Okushiri Island. The flight lasted about 86 minutes, with Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani noting that this could represent North Korea's most advanced missile to date.
Experts suggest that the missile could be a new type of solid-propelled long-range ballistic missile, which would enable faster and more covert launches compared to older liquid-fueled systems. Solid-fueled missiles like the Hwasong-18 are easier to transport and can be launched more quickly, providing North Korea with a more effective strike capability.
In response to the test, the White House condemned the launch as a violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions, stating it unnecessarily escalates tensions in the region. In reaction, South Korea and the United States conducted joint air drills involving around 110 jets, simulating strikes against enemy launchers, while reinforcing their military readiness in light of North Korea's provocations.
Additionally, South Korean intelligence has indicated that North Korea may be preparing for its seventh nuclear test, with reports of activity at the Punggye-ri test site. There are also concerns about the growing military collaboration between North Korea and Russia, as thousands of North Korean troops are reportedly undergoing training in Russia. This relationship could potentially lead to North Korea seeking advanced military technology in exchange for support in Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
