North Carolina Hurricane Helene Update: 92 People Still Unaccounted For

Ninety-two individuals remain missing in North Carolina weeks after Hurricane Helene devastated the western region, according to Governor Roy Cooper’s announcement on Tuesday.

In a press briefing, Cooper indicated that the number of unaccounted persons could change as ongoing investigations continue. “This is not a final count; our task force is still active,” he stated.

The storm has claimed 95 lives in North Carolina, contributing to a total of over 220 fatalities across affected states, including Florida, where Helene made landfall. Cooper also highlighted the “persistent and dangerous misinformation” surrounding the hurricane, which is hindering relief efforts.

“This misinformation creates confusion and demoralizes both survivors and response teams,” he cautioned. “If you’re spreading false information, please stop. It harms those in western North Carolina who desperately need help.”

Cooper’s remarks come as federal workers face increasing distrust from local residents, a situation intensified by conspiracy theories related to the storm. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has reported adjusting its operations in the state, even temporarily withdrawing from one county due to threats fueled by misinformation.

Recently, law enforcement in Rutherford County arrested an individual who made threats against relief workers and was found with a rifle and a handgun.

Numerous unfounded conspiracy theories—often politically motivated—regarding land confiscation, aid distribution, and weather manipulation have spread rapidly online. Reports suggest that several extremist groups are attempting to exploit the situation and the accompanying rumors.

Hurricane Helene caused significant destruction in various towns across western North Carolina, delivering more than six months’ worth of rain. The mountainous terrain has complicated rescue efforts, with homes and bridges washed away, isolating the popular tourist destination of Asheville.
