No. 13 BYU improved to 7-0 and 4-0 in the Big 12 with a thrilling 38-35 victory over Oklahoma State on Friday night in Provo, Utah.
The Cougars clinched the win with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Jake Retzlaff to Darius Lassiter, coming just 10 seconds before the final whistle. Retzlaff finished the game with 218 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, completing 13 of his 26 attempts. Lassiter was a standout, catching six passes for 129 yards, including the game-winner.
Oklahoma State had briefly taken the lead after Brennan Presley caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Alan Bowman with 1:13 left, capping off a lengthy 17-play, 76-yard drive that chewed up over eight minutes. Prior to that, BYU’s Will Ferrin had kicked a 41-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, giving the Cougars a 28-28 tie after a series of back-and-forth scores.
BYU had pulled ahead 28-21 in the third quarter thanks to a 34-yard touchdown reception by Keelan Marion, who made an impressive catch-and-run down the sideline. However, Oklahoma State quickly responded to start the fourth quarter, executing a nine-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a 16-yard touchdown run by Bowman off a double pass.
Garrett Rangel began the game for the Cowboys but exited after suffering a potential shoulder or collarbone injury during a 54-yard run late in the second quarter. Bowman took over, finishing with 85 yards on 11-for-19 passing along with a touchdown and an interception. Ollie Gordon II led the ground attack for OSU, rushing for 107 yards and two touchdowns.
BYU is set to travel to UCF next Saturday, beginning a challenging two-game road stretch that includes a highly anticipated rivalry matchup against Utah in the "Holy War."
