Tragic NJ Transit Incident: Train Operator Killed, Nearly Two Dozen Injured After Collision with Fallen Tree

A tragic accident occurred on Monday morning involving a New Jersey Transit train, resulting in the death of the train operator and injuries to nearly two dozen passengers. The incident took place around 6 a.m. on the River Line, near the Roebling station just outside Trenton.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy shared the news on social media, stating, "I have been briefed on an accident on the NJ Transit River Line earlier today in which the light rail struck a tree on the tracks, leading to the death of the train operator and injuring passengers. An investigation is underway. Our prayers are with all affected by this tragic incident."

According to NJ Transit, out of the 42 passengers aboard, 23 sustained non-life-threatening injuries, most of which were minor. The deceased train operator has been confirmed, and the remaining 19 passengers were transported via bus to safety.

New Jersey Transit Police are currently investigating the cause of the fallen tree, which remains unclear. Following the accident, River Line service has been suspended in both directions between Trenton and Florence stations due to downed trees across the tracks. NJ Transit is providing substitute bus service for affected passengers.

The River Line runs between Trenton and Camden, and officials are working to address the situation as quickly as possible.
