The New York Jets are making a bold move to salvage their season by finalizing a trade for star wide receiver Davante Adams, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. This blockbuster deal comes as the Jets aim to break their decades-long Super Bowl drought and revive their playoff hopes.
In exchange for Adams, the Las Vegas Raiders will receive a conditional third-round draft pick, which could upgrade to a second-round selection. The Jets will take on Adams' remaining salary, which totals about $13.5 million for the current season, with his contract extending through 2026 at an annual salary of $36.25 million.
Adams, a six-time Pro Bowler, will reunite with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, with whom he enjoyed tremendous success at the Green Bay Packers. From 2014 to 2021, the duo recorded 615 completions for 7,529 yards and 68 touchdowns, making them one of the most prolific partnerships in NFL history.
The Jets, currently on a three-game losing streak and sitting at 2-4, have been in "win-now" mode since acquiring Rodgers. The reunion with Adams has been anticipated ever since Rodgers expressed his admiration for the receiver back in July.
Adams’ time in Las Vegas has been rocky, leading to a trade request after falling out of favor with head coach Antonio Pierce. The Jets emerged as his top choice, successfully outbidding other interested teams to secure his services.
This trade adds significant pressure on Jets general manager Joe Douglas and interim coach Jeff Ulbrich, who stepped in following the firing of Robert Saleh. The Jets have the longest active playoff drought in the league, having missed the postseason for 13 consecutive years.
With Adams joining an already talented receiving corps that includes Garrett Wilson, Mike Williams, and Allen Lazard, expectations are high for the Jets. Despite a challenging season so far, the addition of Adams could be the spark the team needs to turn things around.
Originally traded to the Raiders in 2022 from the Packers, Adams has had standout performances but has struggled recently, missing the last three games due to a hamstring injury. Nonetheless, his arrival in New York signals the Jets' commitment to making a playoff push this season.
