Lionel Messi Guides Inter Miami to Historic Supporters’ Shield Victory Over Columbus Crew

In a thrilling match on Wednesday night, Lionel Messi propelled Inter Miami to its first-ever Supporters’ Shield, clinching the title with a 3-2 win against the Columbus Crew. This victory marks Messi’s second title with the club and his impressive 46th overall.

Messi showcased his remarkable talent by scoring two goals just before halftime. His first was a close-range effort, followed by a stunning curling free-kick that left the opposition goalkeeper with no chance. Although Columbus briefly narrowed the deficit right after the halftime break with a goal from Diego Rossi, Messi’s former Barcelona teammate, Luis Suárez, quickly restored Miami’s two-goal lead. The Crew managed to score again from a penalty by Cucho Hernández in the second half, but Miami held firm to secure the win.

In a post-match interview with Apple TV, Messi expressed his joy for the team, stating, “I am happy. Happy for this group. I knew from the start of the year that we had what it takes to fight for this.” He emphasized the importance of this achievement, saying, “We took charge from the beginning. I’m thrilled to secure the first objective, and we’re already thinking of the next one.”

This victory comes shortly after Messi’s return from a three-month absence due to injury and international duty. In just 17 appearances this season, he has netted 17 goals and provided 15 assists.

By finishing at the top of the regular-season table, Inter Miami has secured home-field advantage for the MLS Cup Playoffs. The team now looks to win its remaining two league matches to challenge the New England Revolution’s record of 73 points set in 2021.

David Beckham, co-owner of the club and former England international, celebrated the achievement on Instagram, saying, “So proud to see our players lift the Supporters’ Shield after a great win in Columbus. Another amazing milestone in the history of this football club, and we’re thrilled to bring this trophy to the best fans in the League. Now we go again and onto the next one.”
