As the Los Angeles County District Attorney reviews new evidence, Lyle and Erik Menendez could soon be released from prison after over 30 years. Nearly two dozen family members are set to speak on their behalf at a news conference Wednesday.

The Menendez brothers were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty, in their Beverly Hills home. While they have never denied the killings, they claimed they acted in self-defense, citing years of physical and sexual abuse from their father. Their attorneys argue that crucial evidence of this abuse was not presented during their trial.

In 2023, the brothers' legal team filed a petition for relief based on new allegations regarding Jose Menendez’s alleged abusive behavior. This includes a letter from Erik Menendez to a cousin, hinting at the abuse he faced.

Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón acknowledged the brothers' guilt in the murders but is currently reviewing the new evidence. In an interview with ABC, he emphasized the significance of the submitted letter, stating, "It is all about the abuse, which was the cornerstone of their defense."

Erik and Lyle’s cousin, Karen Vander MolenCopley, who plans to attend the news conference, expressed her belief that the brothers should be allowed to return home. She reminisced about how the boys' spirits diminished over the years and called their potential release the best birthday gift for her mother.

Recent media attention, including a Netflix documentary, has reignited public interest in the case. Former prosecutor Loni Coombs noted that the documentary prompted numerous inquiries about the new evidence.

She remarked on the evolving societal understanding of sexual abuse against boys, suggesting that the timing of Gascón's review could be a significant turning point for the Menendez brothers.
