Manhunt for Multiple Shooters After Mass Shooting in Birmingham Leaves Four Dead, 18 Injured
A tragic mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, has left four people dead and 18 others injured, prompting police to launch a manhunt for multiple shooters. The incident occurred late Saturday night in the bustling Five Points South entertainment district, where officers responded around 11 p.m. to reports of gunfire.
Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald reported that two men and one woman were found unresponsive on the sidewalk, with a fourth victim succumbing to injuries at a nearby hospital. Among the injured, at least four are in critical condition.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes as gunfire erupted, with some suggesting the shots may have originated from a fully automatic weapon. Investigators are working to determine whether the shooters approached on foot or in a vehicle, emphasizing that the attack appears to have stemmed from a specific incident rather than being random.
Fitzgerald urged local businesses with security cameras to assist in the investigation by reviewing footage from the night of the shooting. The police are collaborating with the FBI and ATF as they seek to identify the intended targets and motives behind the attack.
This incident marks the second mass shooting in Birmingham this year, following a nightclub shooting in July that also resulted in multiple fatalities. With over 400 mass shootings recorded nationwide in 2023, the community is grappling with the pervasive issue of gun violence.
