Erik ten Hag has been relieved of his duties as Manchester United manager following a disappointing 2-1 defeat to West Ham United. The club announced the decision on Monday, signaling a significant leadership change after a poor start to the season. Ten Hag managed only four wins out of 13 matches, which ultimately led to the decision to part ways.

Despite having his contract extended in the summer, Ten Hag struggled to deliver results, earning just 11 points from nine league games. This lack of success raised concerns about the team’s chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League, with United currently sitting in 14th place in the Premier League, a notable drop from their eighth-place finish last season.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, a former United player, has been appointed as the interim manager and will lead the team in the upcoming Carabao Cup match against Leicester City. Although his managerial experience is limited, he previously enjoyed success with PSV Eindhoven, where he led the team to a cup victory before departing in 2023.

The decision to dismiss Ten Hag followed a thorough review of the team's performance, involving discussions among club executives, including new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Initially, the club had decided to keep Ten Hag after a surprising FA Cup victory over Manchester City, opting to extend his contract until June 2026.

Manchester United's management is already assessing potential permanent replacements for Ten Hag. Thomas Tuchel was a top candidate during the summer, but he has since taken on the role of England manager. The club’s leadership, including Ratcliffe and sporting director Dan Ashworth, has shown interest in Gareth Southgate, although he has expressed a desire to pause coaching until next summer.

As the team prepares for the upcoming matches under Van Nistelrooy’s interim leadership, the future direction of Manchester United remains uncertain. Fans and analysts are keenly observing how the club navigates this transition and what steps will be taken to improve their performance in the league.
