Dame Maggie Smith, Iconic Actress from Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, Dies at 89


Dame Maggie Smith, the beloved actress known for her roles in the Harry Potter series and Downton Abbey, has passed away at the age of 89. Her sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, announced her death on September 27, stating she died peacefully in a London hospital surrounded by family.


In their heartfelt statement, they expressed gratitude to the staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and requested privacy during this difficult time.


Smith's illustrious career spanned over 70 years, featuring more than 80 films and television shows. She won two Academy Awards for her performances in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) and California Suite (1978), as well as four Golden Globe Awards and multiple Emmy Awards for her television work, including her iconic role as Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey.


Born in 1934 in Ilford, England, Smith made her stage debut in 1952. She became a household name for her portrayal of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter franchise, where she charmed audiences across eight films. Her sharp wit and memorable characters made her a beloved figure in both film and theater.


Smith was married twice, first to actor Robert Stephens and later to playwright Beverley Cross, until his death in 1998. She is survived by her two sons and five grandchildren. Smith's legacy as a talented and fiercely independent actress will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
