The Detroit Lions secured a dramatic 31-29 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in a thrilling back-and-forth contest on Sunday. The game featured multiple lead changes, but it was a late clutch drive by the Lions that ultimately clinched the win. After trailing 28-17 in the third quarter, the Vikings momentarily took control with two field goals from Will Reichard and a fumble return touchdown by linebacker Ivan Pace Jr.
Despite their momentum, the Vikings failed to extend their lead during a critical four-minute drive, punting the ball after a three-and-out with just 2:32 left on the clock. This opened the door for Detroit, who responded aggressively with a series of plays that advanced them into Minnesota territory, including a 14-yard run by Jahmyr Gibbs and a 16-yard pass from Jared Goff to Gibbs. Goff also connected with Amon-Ra St. Brown for a key 14-yard gain, setting up the Lions for a potential game-winning field goal.
With time running out, kicker Jake Bates delivered under pressure, making a 44-yard field goal with just 15 seconds remaining. The Vikings attempted a last-minute drive, completing a pass and spiking the ball, but Sam Darnold was sacked on the final play, sealing the victory for Detroit.
Gibbs was a standout performer for the Lions, scoring two touchdowns in the second quarter to help establish a 21-10 lead at halftime. Goff had an exceptional day, completing 22 of 25 passes for 280 yards, along with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
For the Vikings, Darnold went 22 of 27 for 259 yards, with a touchdown to Justin Jefferson, but the loss left Minnesota struggling as the Lions improved to 5-1, marking the end of undefeated teams in the NFC. The Lions will next face the Titans at home for Week 8.
