Kamala Harris has officially conceded the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump, following a phone call on Wednesday, November 6, where she congratulated him on his victory. The 60-year-old vice president expressed her commitment to a peaceful transition of power, emphasizing the importance of moving forward together as a nation. Harris also conveyed her hopes that Trump would be a president for all Americans. This marks the end of her presidential campaign, which began in July after President Joe Biden dropped out and endorsed her as his successor.

Harris’s decision to run for president was a pivotal moment in her political career. After Biden's endorsement, she quickly gained momentum, securing the Democratic nomination by earning more than the required 1,976 pledged delegates during the Democratic National Convention. She selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate in August, positioning herself as a candidate focused on unity and defeating Donald Trump’s "extreme" agenda.

The vice president’s campaign was grounded in themes of national unity, social justice, and a commitment to progressive policies. Harris spent much of her time traveling the country, engaging with voters and highlighting the stark contrast between her vision for America and Trump’s political platform. She positioned herself as the candidate who could heal divisions in the country, having previously made history as the first woman, first Black person, and first person of Indian descent to serve as vice president.

Throughout the election cycle, Harris received significant support from prominent Democrats, including President Biden, who publicly reaffirmed his endorsement of her as the party's nominee. Biden described selecting Harris as his vice president in 2020 as “the best decision I’ve made,” and stressed the importance of rallying behind her to defeat Trump in 2024.

Harris is scheduled to address the nation at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, November 6, from Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she completed her undergraduate studies. Her speech will reflect on the outcome of the election and underscore her commitment to ensuring a smooth transition of power, as she urges the nation to come together after a hard-fought campaign.
