Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly on the verge of announcing his resignation as the leader of the Liberal Party amid escalating pressure and declining popularity. Sources suggest that Trudeau, who has served as prime minister for nine years, could step down as early as Monday, with speculation growing over the timing of his departure before an emergency meeting of Liberal lawmakers scheduled for Wednesday.

At 53, Trudeau has led the country for nearly a decade, taking office in 2015 after reviving the Liberal Party from a third-place position in the House of Commons. His tenure has been marked by a progressive agenda focused on gender equality, climate change, and social reforms. However, recent polling has shown his party facing significant losses in the upcoming election, largely due to voter dissatisfaction with rising costs and the ongoing housing crisis.

Trudeau’s relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump has also complicated his position, particularly with Trump set to impose tariffs on Canadian goods once he is sworn in. In response, Trudeau met with Trump in Florida in late November in an effort to ease tensions, but his efforts have not been enough to quell calls for his resignation.

In December, more than 50 Liberal members of parliament, mainly from Ontario, reportedly held a meeting in which they concluded that Trudeau should step down to give the party a better chance in the next election. Trudeau’s leadership has also been tested by a series of high-profile resignations, including that of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.

If Trudeau does resign, it will leave the Liberal Party without a permanent leader ahead of the federal election, which must be held by October 20. This has fueled discussions about the possibility of moving up the election date to ensure a stable leadership transition.

While it remains uncertain whether Trudeau will leave immediately or remain in office until a successor is chosen, his potential resignation marks a significant moment in Canadian politics, reflecting the pressure he faces from both within his party and the public as he navigates a challenging political landscape.
