Jenny Shimizu Reflects on Her Wild Romance with Madonna in the '90s

Model Jenny Shimizu has opened up about her unconventional love affair with Madonna in the latest episode of Hulu's docuseries In Vogue: The 90s. The 57-year-old reminisced about the thrill and spontaneity of their relationship, describing it as both exhilarating and surreal.

"You don’t say no to Madonna in the '90s," Shimizu recalled. “It felt like being a high-class hooker—seriously! I’d get calls like, ‘Can you meet me at my Paris show? You’re in Europe, right?’”

Shimizu recounted how she'd rush from fashion events, saying, “I’d be like, ‘Sure, I’m just finishing up at Prada. I’ll catch a flight right after!’” After a whirlwind night at the Ritz, she would return to Milan in the early hours.

Reflecting on that vibrant decade, Shimizu noted, “It was a crazy and fun time. There’s a heartfelt aspect to those memories.” She also shared the significance of her appearance in a high-profile campaign for Calvin Klein, where her face graced a massive billboard that read “American Beauty.”

“Being Japanese, having parents who went through internment camps, and being gay, it was powerful to see that billboard and feel recognized,” she said. “Calvin made a huge, positive impact globally with that campaign.”

Madonna, an enduring icon for the LGBTQ+ community, has long embraced her own complex sexuality. In a 1991 interview with Advocate, she shared her belief that “everyone has a bisexual nature,” further cementing her role as a pioneer for sexual expression.

Shimizu’s candid reflections on her time with Madonna and the fashion world offer a glimpse into a vibrant era that celebrated both love and individuality.
