James Van Der Beek recently shared his colorectal cancer diagnosis in a heartfelt Instagram post on November 3. The 47-year-old actor expressed regret that his loved ones learned about his health issue through the media instead of directly from him. He acknowledged the widespread nature of cancer, noting that approximately 2 billion people globally receive this diagnosis each year, and he is now among them.
In his post, Van Der Beek mentioned that he had intended to discuss his diagnosis and journey in detail with PEOPLE to raise awareness, but plans changed when he was informed that a tabloid would be publishing the news early. He has been dealing with his condition privately, focusing on treatment and his overall health, and stated that he is currently feeling strong and in a good place.
He offered apologies to those close to him for the sudden revelation and reflected on how the process has not unfolded according to his preferred timeline. Despite the unexpected nature of his diagnosis, he emphasized the importance of taking each surprise as a signpost toward a greater purpose. Van Der Beek expressed gratitude for the love and support he has received and promised to share more details when he feels ready.
Accompanying his announcement, he shared a video montage featuring moments with his children, set to the song "Autumn Breeze" by Richard LaForge. In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, he reiterated his diagnosis and highlighted the supportive role of his family in his journey. He conveyed optimism about his situation, stating, “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”
Despite his diagnosis, Van Der Beek continues to work in the entertainment industry. He recently appeared on Walker and is set to star in the upcoming Tubi film Sidelined: The QB and Me, releasing on November 29. Additionally, he will participate in The Real Full Monty, a special aimed at raising awareness for various cancers, including colorectal cancer, premiering on December 9.
