The Israeli military has captured a senior Hezbollah operative during an amphibious raid in northern Lebanon. Members of the elite Shayetet 13 naval commando unit executed the operation on the coast of Batroun, seizing the individual and returning him to Israeli territory. An Israeli military official stated that the captured operative is now being investigated by Unit 504, the IDF's intelligence division.
Shayetet 13, often likened to the U.S. Navy SEALs, is renowned for its strategic sabotage missions, which involve conducting operations across enemy lines. The unit has a history of targeting vital infrastructure and enemy seaports during wartime. Eyewitness accounts from Lebanon’s National News Agency reported seeing an unidentified military force landing at Batroun beach early Friday morning, leading to the apprehension of a local resident, Imad Amhaz.
The Lebanese government is currently investigating the incident in Batroun. Hezbollah has referred to the raid as “Zionist aggression” but has not provided further details on the matter. CNN has sought additional comments from Hezbollah regarding the operation.
An Israeli military official emphasized that the IDF will continue to take necessary actions to protect Israel and its citizens. This raid occurs shortly after Hezbollah claimed to have targeted an Israeli naval base associated with Shayetet 13 on September 23, an assertion that the IDF did not confirm.
While the IDF acknowledged that no injuries were reported from the alleged naval base attack, it has remained tight-lipped about the specifics. The recent capture highlights ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah amid regional security concerns.
