At least 87 people have been killed and more than 40 injured in an Israeli airstrike on Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The strike targeted a residential area, leaving many individuals trapped under the rubble. While Israel is investigating the casualty figures, it has described earlier numbers reported by Hamas as exaggerated.
The United Nations has warned that the situation in Gaza is worsening, with Tor Wennesland, the UN's peace process coordinator, stating that "nowhere is safe." He condemned the ongoing attacks on civilians and called for an immediate end to hostilities, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and unimpeded humanitarian aid access to the region.
Dr. Eid Sabbah, the director of nursing at Kamal Adwan Hospital, reported that the airstrike completely destroyed multiple residential blocks. He expressed concerns about the humanitarian crisis, noting that ambulance crews were struggling to reach the site of the strike. Verified images from the hospital have shown the injuries sustained by victims of the attack.
The recent escalation follows Israel's intensified military campaign in northern Gaza, aimed at preventing Hamas from regrouping. Humanitarian organizations have raised alarms about the severe lack of aid entering the area, with reports indicating a dramatic decline in assistance compared to previous months.
As the conflict continues, the humanitarian toll has skyrocketed, with over 42,000 reported deaths in Gaza since the war began on October 7, 2023.
