On October 26, Israel launched its largest airstrike operation in Iran, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two nations. Dubbed "Days of Repentance," the operation targeted critical military infrastructure, aiming to deliver both symbolic and tactical blows to Iran’s military capabilities. This marked a turning point, showcasing Israel's readiness to project power deep into Iranian territory.
Former Mossad deputy director Ram Ben-Barak emphasized the operation's success, noting that Israeli jets were able to strike specific targets without detection, demonstrating the ability to reach any point in Iran. The airstrikes involved around 100 aircraft and focused on 20 distinct locations, including missile and drone bases. The operation was conducted with remarkable precision, neutralizing air defenses before launching the main assault.
The airstrike unfolded in three phases, beginning with the dismantling of Iran’s air defense systems. Following this, Israeli jets targeted military sites, including drone manufacturing facilities and missile production plants. While Iranian officials downplayed the strikes, Israeli analysts reported significant damage to military assets, particularly in facilities critical for missile development.
In addition to targeting military infrastructure, the strikes impacted Iran's missile production pipeline, particularly in Khojir near Tehran. Although Israel did not directly strike nuclear facilities, the operation successfully targeted supporting infrastructure related to Iran's military satellite capabilities, further undermining Tehran’s military ambitions.
The coordination between Israel and the United States was crucial to the operation's execution. Diplomatic discussions facilitated the establishment of air corridors over Iraqi airspace, ensuring the mission's smooth progression. While the U.S. did not participate directly in the airstrikes, its support and advanced defense systems played a key role in enabling Israel's military actions.
Following the operation, IDF Chief of Staff LTG Herzi Halevi issued a clear warning about Israel’s capabilities, stating that any threat could be neutralized at any time. Despite the operation's immediate tactical success, Israeli officials remain cautious about the long-term impact on Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The ongoing collaboration with the U.S. will be vital for maintaining pressure on Iran and ensuring regional stability in the future.
