Israel recently conducted a significant airstrike on Iran, destroying three of its Russian-made S-300 missile defense systems during an operation called "Days of Repentance." This strike, which took place on October 26, represents a marked escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two nations. The targeted assault aimed at critical military infrastructure, delivering both tactical and symbolic messages following Iran's earlier missile attacks on Israel.

The Biden administration was informed in advance about the airstrike, with Israeli officials selecting targets to degrade Iran's capability to launch future ballistic missile strikes against Israel. Earlier this year, Iran possessed four S-300 systems, but one was taken out by Israel in April. A senior U.S. official confirmed that the recent airstrikes effectively neutralized three of these missile defense systems.

Israeli officials indicated that the majority of Iran's air defense had been compromised. Internal communications revealed that Amos Hochstein, a senior adviser to President Biden, stated, "Iran is essentially naked" without its missile defenses. In addition to the missile systems, Israeli forces also destroyed multiple radar systems crucial for guiding ballistic missiles, further limiting Iran’s retaliatory capabilities.

Israel Defense Forces Chief of the General Staff, LTG Herzi Halevi, emphasized the readiness of Israeli forces, stating, "Any threat, anywhere, at any time, we will know how to reach it, we will know how to strike." He noted that Israel had only deployed a portion of its military capabilities, hinting at potential further actions if Iran escalates its aggression.

In response to the situation, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has urged Iran not to retaliate. Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh described Israel's strike as targeted at military objectives and expressed hope that it would signify an end to the cycle of retaliation. She reiterated that Israel's response was necessary after Iran launched 200 ballistic missiles targeting civilian areas earlier this month.
