The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced plans to distribute special payments of up to $1,400 to more than one million taxpayers who did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns. These payments, totaling approximately $2.4 billion, are set to be issued automatically by late January 2025.
Key Details:
Eligibility: Taxpayers who filed a 2021 tax return but did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, potentially missing out on one or more Economic Impact Payments during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Payment Amount: Eligible individuals may receive up to $1,400.
Distribution Method: Payments will be automatically deposited into bank accounts or sent via paper check to the address on file.
No Action Required: Eligible taxpayers do not need to take any action to receive these payments.
Deadline for Non-Filers: Taxpayers who have not yet filed their 2021 tax returns have until April 15, 2025, to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit and any other refunds they may be owed.
This initiative aims to ensure that eligible individuals receive the financial support intended to mitigate the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information, visit the IRS website.
