Rocco Becht delivered a thrilling finish for No. 9 Iowa State, scoring a go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard sneak with just 30 seconds left, clinching a 38-35 comeback victory over UCF. Jontez Williams sealed the win with an interception of Jacurri Brown’s final pass, preventing what could have been a major upset. With this win, the Cyclones improved to 7-0, matching the best start in program history set in 1938.
Despite a challenging game, Becht's determination shone through. He completed 20 of 46 passes for 274 yards, along with two interceptions, while rushing for a career-high 97 yards on 20 carries. His decisive touchdown run capped off an impressive 80-yard drive in the closing moments, demonstrating both precision and resilience. Iowa State’s defense, which had been the best in the Big 12, faced a tough challenge from UCF's potent rushing attack.
UCF took a commanding lead at one point, highlighted by RJ Harvey's 196 rushing yards and a key 1-yard touchdown run that put them ahead 35-27. The Knights’ defensive standout, Braeden Marshall, nearly added to their scoring with a 70-yard interception return, but his premature celebration resulted in a pivotal turnover. Iowa State capitalized on this and turned the game around with a crucial drive late in the fourth quarter.
With this victory, Iowa State remains tied with BYU atop the Big 12 standings, continuing their unbeaten streak. They will head into a bye week before facing Texas Tech, while UCF looks to regroup as they prepare to host No. 13 BYU next Saturday.
The Cyclones' ability to come back from adversity showcased their growing prowess as they aim to maintain their momentum in the season ahead.
