Interstate 40 is currently impassable between Tennessee and Asheville, North Carolina, due to severe flooding and a mudslide resulting from the remnants of Hurricane Helene. The situation has led to widespread road closures across Western Carolina.

According to DriveNC.gov, the following sections of I-40 are affected:

  • I-26: Closed in both directions between Exit 49 (US 64) and Exit 53 (Upward Road) south of Asheville.

  • I-40: All lanes are shut down between Exit 66 (Ridgecrest) and Exit 72 (Old Fort) due to a mudslide.

  • Near Black Mountain, I-40 is closed one mile west of Exit 64 (NC 9).

  • The route is also blocked at the Tennessee-North Carolina state line and at Exit 20 (US-276).

  • I-40 East is closed at Exit 4 (NC 191), while I-40 West is shut down at Exit 7 (Cold Springs Creek Road).

  • In Tennessee, all lanes of I-40 in Cocke County are also closed, as reported by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Officials from the North Carolina Department of Transportation have indicated that travel in all of Western Carolina is significantly impacted, advising drivers to avoid the area.
