Hurricane Helene Leaves Widespread Devastation Across the Southeast

Hurricane Helene has wreaked havoc across the Southeast, making landfall in Florida's Big Bend as one of the strongest hurricanes on record. The storm has resulted in at least 62 fatalities across multiple states, including 10 in North Carolina, 23 in South Carolina, and 11 in Florida. Thousands remain unaccounted for, particularly in hard-hit areas like Buncombe County, North Carolina, where rescue operations are ongoing amid disrupted communications and severe flooding.

With nearly 400 roads closed in North Carolina and over 2.6 million people without power across the Southeast, emergency services are stretched thin. Communities are grappling with flooded neighborhoods, destroyed homes, and urgent needs for clean water and supplies. Small businesses in Asheville, a key tourist destination, have suffered devastating losses just as the busy season approaches.

As residents face mounting challenges, including rising floodwaters and mudslides, officials are calling for urgent support and resources. The situation remains dire as additional rainfall is expected, compounding the disaster’s effects.
