Hurricane Milton Intensifies to Category 3, Threatens Florida with Severe Storm Surge and Winds

Hurricane Milton has rapidly intensified into a Category 3 storm, prompting hurricane and storm surge watches along Florida's western Gulf Coast. The National Weather Service warns that Milton could be a historic storm, with life-threatening conditions expected by midweek.

Currently located 750 miles west-southwest of Tampa, Milton boasts maximum sustained winds of 120 mph and is moving east-southeast at 8 mph. A hurricane watch is in effect from Chokoloskee to the mouth of the Suwannee River, including Tampa Bay, meaning hurricane conditions are likely within 48 hours.

Forecasts indicate storm surges could reach 8 to 12 feet above ground, particularly if the peak surge coincides with high tide. Flood watches are also in effect due to prior rainfall, with totals expected to reach 5 to 10 inches across the peninsula, potentially leading to significant flooding.

Residents in storm surge-prone areas should heed evacuation orders and prepare for damaging winds, expected to begin Wednesday. Isolated tornado threats may also develop in parts of west-central and southern Florida as the storm approaches.

Preparations should be completed by Tuesday evening, as conditions will worsen thereafter.
