Hezbollah Supports Ceasefire Efforts in Lebanon, Marks Shift in Stance
Hezbollah's Deputy Secretary General, Naim Qassem, announced the group's support for a ceasefire in Lebanon, marking the first time they have endorsed a truce without linking it to the ongoing war in Gaza. “We support the political efforts led by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri aimed at achieving a ceasefire,” Qassem stated, emphasizing that once a ceasefire is established, further discussions can follow.
Previously, Hezbollah had conditioned a halt to its attacks on Israel on a ceasefire with Hamas in Gaza. Qassem's recent remarks come amid escalating tensions, with Hezbollah continuing to launch rockets into northern Israel and Israel conducting operations against the group in southern Lebanon.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to Qassem’s comments, urging the Lebanese people to oppose Hezbollah and warning of severe consequences if hostilities persist. He highlighted the suffering experienced by all Lebanese due to Hezbollah’s actions.
Despite the call for ceasefire talks, Qassem's speech conveyed a strong commitment to Hezbollah's military readiness, asserting, “If the enemy continues its war, then the battlefield will be decisive, and the battlefield belongs to us.” The conflict has already claimed over 1,400 lives in Lebanon and displaced more than 1.2 million people.
