Helicopter Crash in Houston

A tragic helicopter crash occurred in Houston’s Second Ward on Sunday night, resulting in multiple fatalities, including a child. The privately-owned Robinson R44 helicopter struck a communications tower behind residential homes, causing a significant explosion that was heard up to half a mile away. Mayor John Whitmire confirmed that the crash happened just before 8 p.m. near Engelke Street and North Ennis Street.

There were four people aboard the helicopter at the time of the crash, according to Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz. The aircraft had reportedly taken off from Ellington Airport, approximately 17 miles south of the crash site, though its destination remains unclear. The mayor expressed his condolences over the loss of life and highlighted the fortunate circumstances that prevented an even larger disaster, noting the presence of a butane tank nearby.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with fire personnel urging bystanders to keep their distance due to the active fire and potential dangers. The explosion resulted in the communications tower being toppled, with some nearby homes losing power. Photos shared by the fire department depicted the damaged tower lying in a dirt clearing behind homes, underscoring the severity of the incident.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is set to investigate the crash thoroughly, given the extensive damage and loss of life. Chief Diaz urged residents to avoid touching any debris from the helicopter if found and to report it to authorities. The community is grappling with the shock of the incident as officials work to understand the circumstances surrounding the crash.
