Gators Celebrate Big In-State Win Over UCF

In front of a sold-out crowd of 90,369 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, the Florida Gators secured a crucial 24-13 victory over UCF, marking their second consecutive win. The game started strong for the Gators, who executed a 15-play, 75-yard touchdown drive on their opening possession, capped by Graham Mertz’s 13-yard pass to Elijhah Badger.

The Gators dominated the first half, leading 24-3 at halftime, thanks to contributions from both Mertz and DJ Lagway in their two-quarterback system. Mertz completed 19 of 23 passes for 179 yards, while Lagway added a notable 37-yard throw to set up a touchdown.

Defensively, Florida was impressive, limiting UCF’s potent rushing attack to just 108 yards and recording five sacks. Tyreak Sapp praised the team’s preparation, saying they focused on exploiting weaknesses in UCF’s offense.

Head coach Billy Napier, who had faced scrutiny in recent weeks, expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress, stating, “Today was a product of a lot of hard work.” After a rocky start to the season, the Gators showed a renewed intensity, culminating in a much-needed victory that reignited hope among fans.

As the team sang their alma mater post-game, center Jake Slaughter reflected on the experience: “It’s a lot more fun after you win a game.”
