Paul Di’Anno, the former vocalist of Iron Maiden, has sadly passed away at the age of 66 at his home in Salisbury, UK. His death was confirmed on October 21st by his longtime record label, Conquest Music, on behalf of his family. Di’Anno had been facing health issues for several years, which had confined him to performing in a wheelchair. Despite these challenges, he managed to play over 100 shows since 2023, with his final performance taking place at Kraków’s Hype Park on August 30th.
Born in 1958 in Chingford, East London, Di’Anno began his musical career in various rock bands before joining Iron Maiden in 1978. He made a significant impact on the band’s early sound with his unique combination of soaring vibrato and gritty swagger. Di’Anno was instrumental in the success of Iron Maiden’s first two albums, Iron Maiden (1980) and Killers (1981), as well as the Maiden Japan live EP, before departing the band in 1981.
After leaving Iron Maiden, Di’Anno continued to pursue his music career with groups like Battlezone, Killers, Gogmagog, and Paul Di'Anno's Warhorse. He also released several solo albums, further establishing his presence in the metal scene.
His upcoming release, The Book of the Beast, scheduled for 2024, is a compilation of original songs and re-recorded material from his time with Iron Maiden, reflecting his lasting influence in the genre.
Di’Anno’s legacy as a pioneering metal vocalist is widely recognized, with fans remembering him for his powerful voice and significant contributions to Iron Maiden’s early sound.
