Hurricane Milton Leaves Florida Reeling with Flooding and Power Outages
As Florida grapples with the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, over 2 million homes and businesses remain without power. The Category 3 hurricane, which made landfall with 120 mph winds, caused extensive damage, flooding, and a deadly tornado outbreak, leading to at least 16 fatalities statewide.
Communities are still inundated, with residents salvaging belongings from flooded homes. The storm dumped more than 18 inches of rain in some areas, resulting in impassable roads and rising river levels. Flood warnings are in effect across several counties, while coastal areas face dangerous waves and rip currents.
Major airports in Tampa and Orlando reopened on Friday, although operations resumed with numerous flight cancellations and delays. Sarasota Bradenton International Airport remains closed due to storm damage.
In addition to the recovery efforts, the IRS has extended tax deadlines for those affected by the hurricane, with some residents now having until November 1 and February 3, 2025, to file.
As authorities work to restore order, the toll of Hurricane Milton continues to be felt, with recovery efforts expected to take considerable time.
