Florida State football reached a new low with a disheartening 42-16 loss to SMU, dropping to 1-4 after starting the season ranked 10th nationally. The Mustangs, making their ACC debut, dominated the Seminoles, who allowed the most points since last season’s Orange Bowl.
FSU’s defense struggled early, conceding an 11-play, 75-yard opening drive to SMU. Though quarterback DJ Uiagalelei led a promising touchdown drive, he later threw two interceptions, including one that set up a pivotal flea flicker touchdown for SMU.
Despite a brief safety that kept the game close at halftime, FSU’s momentum crumbled in the second half, with SMU outscoring them 28-7. Uiagalelei’s lone bright spot was a touchdown pass to Landen Thomas, but he was ultimately replaced after throwing a pick-six.
The offense sputtered, managing only 297 total yards, while the defense allowed 469 yards and struggled with tackling and coverage. FSU’s 10 penalties for 79 yards further compounded their issues. With consistent mistakes and a lack of effort, this defeat marked one of FSU's most humiliating losses in recent memory.
