Florida Man ‘Lieutenant Dan’ Defies Hurricane Milton Evacuation Orders
A one-legged Florida man, affectionately known as Lieutenant Dan, is making headlines for refusing to evacuate his boat as Hurricane Milton approaches. Joseph Malinowski likened himself to Noah, asserting that “the safest place to be is on a boat in a flood.”
As the storm nears Tampa Bay, with warnings urging residents to “flee or die,” Joe remains steadfast on his 20ft vessel in Tampa Harbor. Despite facing strong winds and the threat of severe weather, he believes he’ll be safe anchored to the dock, dismissing the dangers with a casual attitude.
Joe, who lost his leg in a car accident at 16, shared that he feels prepared and isn’t worried, stating, “This is not even a minor inconvenience.” He has even rejected a life jacket, confident in his ability to swim if necessary.
Despite the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission advising against staying on boats during severe weather, Joe insists that God has guided him to stay put. Supporters have set up a GoFundMe to help him purchase a new ship, raising over $19,000.
As Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall late Wednesday with potentially devastating winds and floods, authorities continue to encourage evacuation for safety.
