At least one person has died and hundreds have been rescued in New Mexico following severe rain and thunderstorms that caused Flash Flood Emergencies in the Roswell area over the weekend. The torrential downpour led to widespread flooding, trapping residents in their homes and vehicles. The City of Roswell reported numerous motorists stranded, with some needing to wait for rescue atop their submerged vehicles.
Rescue efforts began Saturday as the heavy rains intensified, with the New Mexico National Guard deploying to assist. Over 290 individuals have been rescued from the floodwaters, and at least 38 people required hospitalization. Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar of the New Mexico National Guard emphasized their preparedness for this situation due to prior flooding events in Ruidoso.
Record-breaking rainfall has been recorded in Roswell, with the National Weather Service reporting 5.78 inches—surpassing the previous record from 1901. Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington even found himself trapped in his police vehicle, broadcasting a video message to warn residents of the dangerous conditions and urging them to stay home.
While the Flash Flood Emergencies have since expired, flood alerts remain active across eastern New Mexico, including in Roswell and Las Vegas. The NWS continues to warn of ongoing dangerous flooding, with forecasts indicating the potential for more thunderstorms.
The NOAA Storm Prediction Center has classified parts of the region as a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather, raising concerns about additional heavy rain, large hail, damaging winds, and even a chance of tornadoes.
