As Donald Trump edges closer to a potential return to the White House, one of his most high-profile backers, Elon Musk, could stand to benefit greatly. Musk, the world’s richest man, was a prominent figure during the election, spending election night with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. As the results signaled a likely victory for Trump, Musk shared his support on social media, declaring that Americans had given Trump “a crystal clear mandate for change.” This marks the continuation of Musk’s firm backing for the former president.
Musk’s support for Trump goes beyond mere words. In the wake of an assassination attempt on Trump in July, Musk quickly aligned himself with the Republican candidate, becoming one of his most influential donors. The tech billionaire contributed more than $119 million to a Super PAC aimed at re-electing Trump. In the final weeks leading up to the election, Musk even ran a get-out-the-vote campaign in battleground states, including a controversial daily giveaway of $1 million, which survived legal challenges and gained significant media attention.
If Trump wins a second term, Musk stands to gain in several key ways. Trump has already stated that he would offer Musk a role in his administration, specifically creating a “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), a concept Musk has embraced. This initiative would aim to reduce government waste and bureaucracy, aligning with Musk’s long-standing vision of a leaner, more efficient government structure, which could also open the door for future collaborations between Musk’s companies and the federal government.
Musk’s businesses, particularly SpaceX and Tesla, could see major gains from a Trump administration. SpaceX, Musk’s aerospace company, is a leader in government contracts for satellite launches and space exploration. With a close ally in the White House, Musk could further secure government contracts and expand SpaceX’s role in future space missions. Additionally, the Pentagon’s growing focus on satellite technology could offer SpaceX significant opportunities for growth, especially as the company moves into building spy satellites.
Tesla, Musk’s electric vehicle company, could benefit from a Trump presidency through reduced regulatory burdens. Musk has long criticized the U.S. government’s regulatory framework, and Trump has promised to lower taxes and reduce red tape for businesses. For Tesla, this could mean fewer restrictions, greater market freedom, and potential tax cuts that would bolster its profitability. However, Tesla is currently under scrutiny for its self-driving technology, and Trump’s regulatory policies could either ease that scrutiny or bring about more favorable outcomes for the company.
Despite these potential benefits, Musk's relationship with Trump could attract controversy. Musk has faced criticism for his stance on labor unions, especially following recent claims about firing striking workers, which led to legal challenges from the United Auto Workers (UAW). Nevertheless, with Trump’s promise to lower corporate taxes and reduce regulatory oversight, Musk likely views a second Trump term as an opportunity to further enhance his wealth and business interests, making a Trump victory potentially very lucrative for the tech mogul.
