Dame Maggie Smith’s co-stars from the acclaimed series Downton Abbey are expressing their heartfelt tributes after the Oscar-winning actress passed away at the age of 89 on September 27. Her sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, announced her death in a statement, revealing that she died peacefully in a hospital, surrounded by friends and family. They described her as an "intensely private person" and noted the profound loss felt by her family, which includes two sons and five grandchildren.

Smith was best known for her role as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, throughout all six seasons of the beloved PBS series. She also gained fame for portraying Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films.

Michelle Dockery, who played Lady Mary Crawley, reflected on her late co-star, saying, "There was no one quite like Maggie. I feel tremendously lucky to have known such a maverick. She will be deeply missed, and my thoughts are with her family."

Paul Giamatti praised Smith as “a genius and a delight,” recalling her kindness toward his son during a visit to the set. “A privilege to be around her,” he added.

Hugh Bonneville, who portrayed Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, acknowledged Smith's sharp wit and formidable talent. "Anyone who ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her brilliance. She was a true legend of her generation," he stated, extending condolences to her family.
