Disney has launched a new service that allows guests at its U.S. parks to skip lines for a fee, but it comes at a steep price. The "Lightning Lane Premier Pass," announced on Wednesday, permits users to access faster lines at any time during the operating day for a single ride, without needing to reserve it via an app. However, this pass is in addition to the cost of park admission.
The service is being offered in limited quantities and is aimed at a select group of guests. Prices vary based on demand and the specific park being visited. At Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, the pass ranges from $137.39 to $478.19 (after tax) depending on the date and park. For instance, a Premier Pass for a less busy day at Animal Kingdom will cost around $137.39, while the same pass for the Magic Kingdom on a peak day, such as Christmas, could reach $478.19. Passes for Disneyland Resort in California will be priced at $400 (not taxable) per person per day from October 23 until the end of 2024, with variable pricing set to start in 2025.
The mechanics of the new pass differ slightly between the two resorts. At Disney World, the pricing is specific to the park visited, meaning guests will pay differently depending on their chosen destination. Meanwhile, at Disneyland, the pass can be used at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks on the same day, and it can be purchased two days in advance at 7 a.m. PT.
Unlike the previous "Multi Pass" system that required guests to strategize their ride access through an app, the Premier Pass simplifies the process, allowing guests to access faster lines without advance reservations. However, it’s important to note that the pass only grants one access per ride for the day.
Disney is not the only theme park offering express services; Universal has had its own “Express Pass” for over 20 years, allowing guests to skip lines for an additional fee. Universal’s pricing can vary significantly, and it offers both a standard and an unlimited express pass option.
Industry experts suggest that while the new Premier Pass may cater to those with a willingness to spend for a premium experience, many visitors may still prefer more affordable options, such as multi-day tickets combined with the traditional Multi Pass. The Premier Pass essentially fills a gap between the budget-friendly and high-end experiences, targeting guests who prioritize time over cost.
As Disney continues to adapt to criticisms regarding rising prices, it emphasizes that there are options available for visitors on various budgets, including discounted tickets for children. Ultimately, the success of the Premier Pass will depend on whether guests feel the value justifies the price, especially for those who may have time to spare during their visits.
