Hurricane Helene Devastates Southeast: Over 116 Confirmed Dead, Trump to Visit Affected Areas
Hurricane Helene has left a catastrophic mark on the Southeast, with confirmed fatalities rising to at least 116, according to NBC News. North Carolina has been particularly hard hit, accounting for a third of the deaths, with Buncombe County, home to Asheville, suffering the most severe losses—35 lives lost.
The storm made landfall Thursday night in Florida's Big Bend region as a Category 4 hurricane, unleashing torrential rain and causing widespread flooding. Entire communities in Western North Carolina are submerged under several feet of water, prompting urgent rescue efforts.
Although Helene has largely dissipated, its remnants are expected to bring additional rainfall to the already saturated central Appalachians, raising concerns about further flooding.
As recovery efforts continue, power is gradually being restored, but over 2 million customers across multiple states remain without electricity.
In response to the crisis, former President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Valdosta, Georgia, today. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris has canceled her campaign events and returned to Washington to address the situation.
