Dallas Stars Extend Contract with Jake Oettinger: A Look at the Rising Goalie’s Impact

The Dallas Stars have secured their future in net by signing goaltender Jake Oettinger to an impressive eight-year contract extension worth $66 million, starting in the 2025-26 season. This deal averages out to $8.25 million annually.

At just 25 years old, Oettinger has already made a significant mark in the NHL, boasting a 116-48-23 record over 196 regular-season games, complemented by a .914 save percentage and a 2.49 goals-against average. He has also registered 11 shutouts in his career. In the postseason, he has shown his prowess with a 23-22 record in 47 playoff games, leading the Stars to three consecutive postseason appearances and helping them reach the Western Conference Final in both 2023 and 2024.

General Manager Jim Nill praised Oettinger’s contributions, stating, “Jake has established himself as one of the elite goaltenders in the NHL. His unique blend of poise, size, athleticism, and mental toughness has elevated our team. He is a core part of our plans for competing for the Stanley Cup both now and in the future.” Nill also highlighted Oettinger's commitment to community involvement, expressing happiness for him and his wife, Kennedi, as long-term members of the Stars family.

Since the start of the 2020-21 season, Oettinger ranks among the top 10 active goalies in wins (sixth), goals-against average (seventh), and is tied for 11th in save percentage (.914). Notably, his playoff performance over the past three years, with 23 wins, ties him for second-most among all netminders.

This season, Oettinger has continued to impress, starting with a perfect 3-0-0 record, a .948 save percentage, and a 1.63 goals-against average. He currently ranks among the league leaders, saving 4.6 goals above expected, a statistic that ties him with Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets for the third-highest mark in the NHL.

Before his NHL career, Oettinger enjoyed success at Boston University, where he compiled a 58-40-11 record and earned accolades such as Hockey East All-Star and Tournament MVP. He has also represented Team USA on multiple occasions, winning a gold medal in the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championships.

Originally selected by the Stars in the first round of the 2017 NHL Draft (26th overall), Oettinger’s extension solidifies his role as a cornerstone of the franchise as they aim for long-term success.
