Climber Falls to Death at Wyoming's Devils Tower, Partner Rescued After Being Stranded

A tragic accident occurred at Devils Tower in Wyoming when 21-year-old Stewart Phillip Porter from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, fell to his death while rappelling down the iconic geological formation. His climbing partner was left stranded without a rope but was rescued unharmed after calling for help on Sunday evening.

Porter’s death marks the seventh climbing fatality in the park’s 118-year history, which sees around 6,000 climbers tackle its face each year. The pair were attempting a route known as El Cracko Diablo, which is considered relatively easy. They had successfully reached the summit before the fall occurred, though the specifics of the accident remain under investigation, according to Devils Tower National Monument Superintendent Doug Crossen.

Rising nearly 870 feet (265 meters) above the surrounding landscape, Devils Tower is renowned for its stunning columnar jointing, a unique formation of fused pillars of igneous rock created by ancient volcanic activity. Established in 1906 as the first national monument, Devils Tower is also known for its appearance in the 1977 film “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”
