C.J. Stroud delivered a standout performance with 285 passing yards and a touchdown, leading the Houston Texans to a narrow 23-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. This win marked the Texans' fifth straight victory, improving their record to 6-2 and solidifying their position atop the AFC South. Stroud’s bounce-back game came after a disappointing outing against the Packers, showcasing his resilience and ability to perform under pressure.
Joe Mixon also played a crucial role in the victory, rushing for 102 yards and scoring a touchdown. The Texans' defense was instrumental, intercepting Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson and consistently pressuring him throughout the game. Houston's defensive efforts were vital in securing the win, as they managed to contain Indianapolis effectively.
The game's momentum shifted dramatically in the fourth quarter when a critical fumble by Mixon allowed Colts defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo to recover and sprint toward what appeared to be a game-changing touchdown. Initially ruled a score, the play was overturned upon review, revealing that Odeyingbo was down by contact. The Colts struggled to regain their footing afterward, leading to a punt after another sack by Danielle Hunter on Richardson.
Richardson, who was returning from a hip injury, faced significant challenges against the Texans' defense. He completed just 10 of 32 passes for 175 yards and one touchdown, enduring five sacks and numerous hits. On the other hand, Jonathan Taylor made a strong return for the Colts, rushing for 105 yards and a touchdown, energizing the Indianapolis offense after missing three games due to an ankle injury.
The Texans took a 17-10 lead into halftime, and Ka'imi Fairbairn’s second field goal of the half extended their lead to 23-13 early in the fourth quarter. The Colts responded when Richardson found Josh Downs for a 25-yard gain, which was initially ruled a touchdown but later overturned. Taylor capitalized on the short field, scoring from the one-yard line to close the gap to 23-20 with eight minutes remaining.
In addition to the game’s drama, the Texans suffered injuries, losing wide receiver Stefon Diggs to a non-contact knee injury in the third quarter. Diggs had been performing well, catching five passes for 81 yards before his exit. The Texans also dealt with injuries to left tackle Jarrett Patterson and safety Calen Bullock. During halftime, the franchise honored Andre Johnson with his Hall of Fame ring, celebrating his legacy as the first Texan inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Looking ahead, the Colts will visit Minnesota next Sunday, while the Texans prepare to face the Jets on Thursday night.
